Combined M.D./M.B.A. degree

Would you like to become a physician with strong leadership and management skills? If you are interested in management of health care systems, health economics and population-based health care, and possess good leadership, academic and analytic skills, you are an ideal candidate for Wright State University's combined M.D./M.B.A. program.

Overview

The Boonshoft Physician Leadership Development Program offers students management and leadership skills, as well as knowledge of health economics and population-based medicine. It is designed to develop future leaders of the health care system, including CEOs of health care organizations, such as hospitals, hospital systems, government agencies and for-profit health care companies. Students in the program attend monthly physician leadership sessions designed to improve their analytic, business and
management skills.

The program is fully integrated over five years, culminating with a dual degree—the M.D. and a master's degree, such as a Master of Business Administration with a Concentration in Health Care. Unlike many other M.D./M.B.A. programs that are essentially year-out programs, this program begins in the first year and ends in the fifth, although most of the course work for the M.B.A. will be spread over the third, fourth and fifth years. The complete M.D. curriculum will be taught; there will be no compromise on education for either degree. Students participate in a monthly special leadership development program through a series of seminars with M.D./M.P.H. students themed around leadership.

Admissions criteria

Students will be selected on the basis of superior academic performance, evidence of analytical skills, leadership potential and interest or experience in health systems, the organization of health care and the business of health care. Students also must meet the admissions criteria for both the Boonshoft School of Medicine and the Wright State University Raj Soin College of Business M.B.A. Program. For the School of Medicine, that criteria includes taking the Medical College Admission Test. Undergraduate GPA, academic load, community service, extracurricular activities, an interview and letters of recommendation also are considered.

The Raj Soin College of Business admissions requirements for a graduate level program also must be met. These include taking the Graduate Management Admission Test and undergraduate GPA. Application information is available through the School of Graduate Studies.

The admissions process will be coordinated through the Center for Global Health Systems, Management, and Policy. Any student interested in the Boonshoft Physician Leadership Development Program must complete a must complete a Supplemental Application. The form is available online or as a PDF file that can be printed and mailed. (To view the file, you will need Acrobat Reader, a free download.)

Scholarship information

Selected students are eligible for merit-based scholarships that will cover the tuition and fees required for the M.B.A. degree and the fees required for the monthly leadership programs.
