Paul G. Koles, M.D., named chair of the WSU Boonshoft School of Medicine Department of Pathology

Award-winning teacher, experienced clinician oversees pathology education and community services

DAYTON, Ohio-Boonshoft School of Medicine has named Paul G. Koles, M.D., chair of the Department of Pathology. A professor of pathology, Koles also holds a dual appointment in the Department of Surgery.

During Koles' nine years as a full-time faculty member, medical students have selected him to receive the annual Teaching Excellence in Pre-Clinical Medical Education award for an unprecedented seven years. He has also received the Allen N. Pope Special Merit and Teaching Excellence Awards from the Student National Medical Association, a Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award from the Southwestern Ohio Council for Higher Education and a Faculty Mentor Award from the medical school in 2005.

Koles served on the medical school's clinical faculty from 1986 until he became a fully affiliated faculty member in 2001. During his stint as a clinical faculty member, Koles also served as chief of pathology for Kettering Medical Center (KMC) and medical director of KMC clinical laboratories, and he practiced anatomic and clinical pathology with Kettering Pathology Associates. He remains active in clinical practice and handles roughly 400 cases per year for local endocrinologists, in addition to conducting 10 to 15 autopsies annually through the medical school's Regional Autopsy Services.

Koles earned a B.A. from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Mich., and an M.D. from Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, Calif. He completed his residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at Kettering Medical Center/Wright State University, where he also served as chief resident.
