West Dayton Diabetes Day
scheduled November 19

DAYTON, OHIO -- Learning how to live a healthier life with diabetes is the focus of the fifth annual West Dayton Diabetes Day at the Charles R. Drew/West Dayton Health Center on Wednesday, November 19. The free event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Drew health center, located at 1323 West Third Street in Dayton.

Honorary chair for this year's West Dayton Diabetes Day is Michael Ecton, program director and popular radio personality at WDAO AM 12.10.

West Dayton Diabetes Day offers free health screenings for blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol. People who think they may be at risk for diabetes are urged to get a free health screening.

Another popular feature is the Diabetic Soul Food Fest, a free luncheon from 12 noon until 2 p.m. Catered by Good Samaritan Hospital, the menu features oven-fried chicken, greens, and hop 'n john black-eyed peas prepared and served in portions that meet the diet needs of people with diabetes. Free groceries will be given to Diabetes Day participants, while supplies last.

West Dayton Diabetes Day also includes information sessions about healthy nutrition, exercise programs, stress management, massage therapy, spiritual care and community support groups that can help people to manage their diabetes. "The sooner diabetes is detected, the sooner people can begin to make lifestyle changes that will help them live healthier and happier lives with diabetes," says Joy Burgess, director of health promotion programs at the Center for Healthy Communities. "Living with diabetes takes work, but in the long run a healthy lifestyle overall can help to prevent complications of diabetes such as blindness, heart attacks and strokes."

All activities at West Dayton Diabetes Day are free. Advance registration is not required. For more information, contact the Drew Health Center at 276-8327.

West Dayton Diabetes Day is sponsored by Good Samaritan Hospital, the Center for Healthy Communities, the Diabetes Association of the Dayton Area (DADA) and WDAO Radio.
