Plastic Surgery Residency Program

Curriculum

The residency utilizes the Association of Academic Chairs in Plastic Surgery (AACPS) curriculum as its basic curriculum document. All residents and faculty are required to review the goals and objectives for each rotation and will be given a checklist to signoff. Please feel free to view the AACPS web site.

Resident training focuses primarily on plastic, cosmetic, wounds, reconstruction, maxillofacial, breast, research, head and neck, cleft lip and palate, oculoplastic and hand surgery.

Teaching Conferences

Teaching conferences consist of didactic lectures from full-time faculty and clinical faculty at the Plastic Surgery Educational Conference held every week.

Weekly selected reading assignments followed by a quiz out of the Mathes textbook are administered to the plastic surgery residents as well as the third year general surgery residents. The selected reading assignments and quiz will prepare the residents for taking the In-Service Exam for Plastic Surgery.

Plastic Surgery Journal Club is held monthly with selected articles from the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal for practice-based learning.

Hand Journal Club is also held monthly with selected articles from the Journal of Hand Surgery.

Morbidity/mortality practice-based learning/improvement exercises are held monthly with faculty and resident participation.

Distinguished visiting professors are brought to Dayton in conjunction with the Dayton Plastic Surgery Society meetings four times a year. (See the CME Activities Calendar.) The visiting professors occasionally provide presentations to the Plastic Surgery Educational Conference. Lectures and teaching are a prominent part of these visits.

Research

Academic interests and development are encouraged and nurtured. The opportunity to participate in clinical research with either the academic or clinical faculty is ever present. Divisional resources include a Ph.D. performing basic laboratory research at the main campus of Wright State University and a clinical nurse researcher for burn/plastics. In addition, university statistics and seed grants are available.
