Match Day

Dayton, Ohio--At noon today, Wright State University School of Medicine has 79 senior medical students who went through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). The Match, conducted annually by the NRMP, is the primary system that matches applicants to medical residency programs with available positions at U.S. teaching hospitals. Of the students who will receive their M.D. degrees in June, more than 25% will stay in the Dayton area and more than 55% will stay in Ohio.

Results, by specialty, from Wright State’s 2003 Match are:

Anesthesiology 2.5%
Emergency Medicine 7.6%
Family Practice 20.3%
Internal Medicine 24.1%
Internal Medicine/Pediatrics 3.8%
Obstetrics and Gynecology 13.9%
Orthopaedic Surgery 2.5%
Pediatrics 5.1%
Psychiatry 6.3%
General Surgery 7.6%, and
Transitional Year 5.1%

The National Residency Matching Program was established in 1952 to provide an orderly and fair mechanism to match the preferences of applicants for U.S. residency positions with residency program choices of applicants. The program provides a common time for the announcement of the appointments, as well as an agreement for programs and applicants to honor the commitment to offer and accept an appointment if a match results. More than 23,900 applicants in the NRMP will find out which residency program they will enter for training.
