Youth Wellness Day targets Kids Age 10-19

DAYTON, OHIO -- Hip-hop dancing, a basketball competition and free health advice for Dayton-area youth will close Wilkinson Street between 2nd and 3rd streets on Saturday, September 13. The event is Dayton's second annual Youth Wellness Day, which runs from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

In addition to the fun and games and free food, Youth Wellness Day provides kids age 10-19 an opportunity to get free immunizations, health screenings and physical exams. Health screenings include tests for blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and HIV. Free physical exams are available to youth who do not have health insurance. Appointments are recommended for physical exams. Parental consent is required for physicals and health screenings of individuals under age 18. For more information call 222-9355 or 208-6856.

"This day is designed to promote the health and well-being of Dayton-area youth," says Joy Burgess, director of health promotion at the Center for Healthy Communities. "Kids may not think they need to worry about their health, but the healthy lifestyle choices they make today can have an impact throughout their lives."

Youth Wellness Day will also feature demonstrations and information on firearm safety, proper use of seat belts and bicycle helmets and alcohol and substance abuse prevention. According to Burgess, these programs are targeted specifically to health hazards and preventable injuries reported among Dayton-area youth. Free bicycle helmets and other prizes will be given to the first 50 teens who complete the Teen Safety and Wellness Challenge. WROU U-92 FM will broadcast live at Youth Wellness Day. Another attraction will be the Healthy Horizons mobile health van from Upper Valley Medical Center. The van features interactive computer games that teach about ways to adopt healthier lifestyles.

Youth Wellness Day is sponsored by the Adolescent Wellness Center, Reach Out of Montgomery County, the Center for Healthy Communities and Bomberger's Teen Center. It is funded in part by the Injury Prevention Center of the Greater Dayton Area.
