Mini Medical School Fall 2007

What is Mini-Medical School?

Boonshoft School of Medicine’s popular Mini-Medical School offers an opportunity for community members to "walk in the shoes of a medical student" for a short time to learn more about biomedical research and practice and to gain a better understanding of the medical school and its mission. The program is usually offered one night a week for four to six weeks in the fall. The cost is usually about $25 for the whole series. Anyone over the age of 16 is welcome to attend. To be notified by U.S. Mail when the next series is scheduled, sign up for our mailing list.

Each year the topics covered in the popular series are different. In the fall of 2007, a team of experts from the school’s Department of Surgery presented Surgery 101, a fast-paced overview of surgical interventions and the latest medical advances for a wide range of diseases and conditions. Why do we offer Mini-Medical School?

Boonshoft School of Medicine has offered Mini-Medical School programs to the general public since 1999. Our purpose in doing this is to:

  • Help people better understand the processes involved in science so they can distinguish between science and pseudo-science and know what characterizes the scientific method.
  • Raise awareness about the importance of biomedical research to modern society and help the public understand the high level of effort necessary to make the journey from laboratory research to the better clinical outcomes.
  • Open a dialogue among research scientists and physicians and the general public so as to build strong community support for the Boonshoft School of Medicine and its mission. Although many in the community are familiar with the education and service missions of the school, our unique research mission is less well known and understood.
