Public health care forum offers chance to ask questions, share opinions
(November 2, 2009) From the H1N1 pandemic to insurance reform, few topics today inspire so much passion or raise so many questions as health care. To help people make sense of these complicated issues, the Wright State University Student Government will sponsor a health care forum entitled “Your Money, Your Health: A Discussion About Health Care,” on Monday, Nov. 9. The forum, which is free and open to the public, will run from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the Student Union atrium on campus.

Mt. Olive One-Stop Center in Dayton providing free seasonal flu shot vouchers to unemployed
(October 12, 2010) The Mt. Olive One-Stop Center is providing free seasonal flu shot vouchers to the unemployed as part of CVS Caremark’s initiative to distribute 100,000 seasonal flu shot vouchers to the unemployed nationwide. The center is a collaborative effort between Mt. Olive Baptist Church and the Substance Abuse Resources & Disability Issues program within the Boonshoft School of Medicine.

WSU research touted by the American Heart Association
(October 7,2009) The American Heart Association is publicizing findings by a team of WSU researchers led by Mariana Morris, Ph.D., vice president for graduate studies and chair and professor of pharmacology and toxicology in the Boonshoft School of Medicine. The researchers found that the timing of fructose intake affects weight gain, blood pressure and behavior.

WSU and Fairborn break ground on the National Center for Medical Readiness Tactical Laboratory at Calamityville®
(September 28, 2009) Representatives from Wright State University and the city of Fairborn, along with government officials and area business and military leaders, gathered at the site of the former CEMEX facility in Fairborn today to mark the groundbreaking for the National Center for Medical Readiness Tactical Laboratory (NCMR-TL) at Calamityville.

Boonshoft School of Medicine creates new Division of Tactical Emergency Medicine
(September 17, 2009) Law enforcement agents and other public safety personnel often work in dangerous environments involving high-risk situations. Meeting that challenge is the mission of the new Division of Tactical Emergency Medicine (DTEM) within the WSU Boonshoft School of Medicine. The division, which is part of the school’s Department of Emergency Medicine, will focus on providing care for public safety personnel, and on developing and teaching best practices for personnel and the medical providers who serve them or work alongside them.

Boonshoft School of Medicine professor appointed to World Health Organization technology project
(August 25, 2009) Katherine Cauley, Ph.D., associate professor of community health with the WSU Boonshoft School of Medicine and director of the school’s Center for Healthy Communities, was selected to serve on the WHO Expert Advisory Group for Innovative Technologies for the “Global Initiative on Health Technologies” project.

Pediatric emergency physician recognized for excellence in clinical care, teaching
(August 18, 2009) Dana B. Drazner, M.D., a pediatric emergency medicine physician with The Children’s Medical Center of Dayton, has received the 2009 James W. Agna, M.D., Award for Clinical Excellence from the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine Department of Emergency Medicine.

Boonshoft School of Medicine convocation marks an important milestone for 100 future physicians
(August 3, 2009) On Sunday, August 2, at the Schuster Performing Arts Center, Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine welcomed 100 new students and their families during a special ceremony to formally mark the start of students’ medical education.

Glenn C. Hamilton, M.D., Receives Trustees' Award for Faculty Excellence
(July 21, 2009) Glenn C. Hamilton, M.D., has been awarded the 2009 Wright State University Trustees' Award for Faculty Excellence, the highest award given by the university. Dr. Hamilton served as chair of the emergency medicine department from 1982 to 2009, when he stepped down to oversee the development of Calamityville™, an education and research facility that will provide one-of-a-kind training opportunities for medical, public health, public safety and civilian and military disaster response decision makers worldwide.

U.S. Department of the Air Force awards Wright State University $2.7 million
(July 10, 2009) Wright State University has received an award from the U.S. Department of the Air Force’s (USAF) Air Force Research Laboratory to enhance collaboration between the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM) and WSU’s National Center for Medical Readiness (NCMR). The award supports the development of the NCMR Tactical Laboratory, also known as Calamityville™, and provides education, research and development projects in disaster response and medical readiness.

Boonshoft School of Medicine honors community partnerships with annual awards

(July 2, 2009) Daniel T. Organisciak, Ph.D., professor and former chair of biochemistry and molecular biology, has been named a 2009 Gold Fellow by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO).

Richard Sherwood, Ph.D., appointed director of Wright State’s Lifespan Health Research Center
(July 1, 2009) Richard J. Sherwood, Ph.D., associate professor of community health and pediatrics, has been appointed director of the Lifespan Health Research Center (LHRC) within the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine Department of Community Health.

Nobel Prize winner Dr. Oliver Smithies to deliver Earl H. Morris Endowed Lecture on July 10
(June 22, 2009) On Friday, July 10, Smithies will deliver the 2009 Earl H. Morris Endowed Lecture at Wright State University. His presentation, entitled “60 years as a bench scientist,” will take place in Gandhi Auditorium in White Hall on the WSU campus and will begin at 10:30 a.m. The lecture, sponsored by the WSU Boonshoft School of Medicine Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, is free and open to the public.

Boonshoft School of Medicine hosts national M.D./M.B.A. conference
(June 2, 2009) Representatives of universities and institutions from around the country converged on the Wright State campus this spring for a high-profile national event. The Seventh Annual M.D./M.B.A. Conference, whose theme was “Physician Leadership in the 21st Century,” took place April 17-19 and brought together more than 50 students, professors, and program directors for a weekend of presentations, social activities, and collaboration.

Tyler M. Angelos receives Dean’s Award, other honors, in addition to medical degree
(May 28, 2009) For Tyler M. Angelos, following in his father’s footsteps turned out to be a straight path to recognition for his own remarkable achievements. Angelos, whose father is an emergency medicine physician at The Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus, received his medical degree and several other prestigious honors during a commencement ceremony for the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine class of 2009 on May 22.

Symposium at Wright State University on June 1 to explore the connections between music, medicine
(May 26, 2009) While most people consider music an art and medicine a science, the two actually have much in common. There is a definite scientific basis to music, which is also deeply mathematical, and healing is an art that requires creativity and vision as well as clinical skill. (May 22, 2009) S. Bruce Binder, M.D., Ph.D., a faculty member at the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine, was selected by his students in the class of 2009 to receive the prestigious Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine award.

Matthew Pellerite, M.P.H., to receive humanism, global service awards alongside M.D. degree
(May 22, 2009) Matthew M. Pellerite, M.P.H., will receive more than his M.D. degree during a commencement ceremony for the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine class of 2009 on May 22. In addition to officially becoming a physician, Pellerite will be singled out for two special awards presented during the ceremony.

Dermatologists to offer free Skin Cancer Screenings May 11-15
(May 1, 2009) Local dermatologists will offer free skin cancer screenings to promote early detection and prevention of skin cancers during the week of May 11-15, 2009. Morning and evening appointments will be available at several locations throughout the city.

Aerospace Medicine graduate to spend six months aboard the International Space Station
