FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 26, 2009
Symposium at Wright State University on June 1 to explore the
connections between music, medicine
Free, public event to feature presentations, performances by
faculty in the WSU Department of Music and Boonshoft School of Medicine
DAYTON, Ohio—While most people consider music an art and medicine
a science, the two actually have much in common. There is a definite
scientific basis to music, which is also deeply mathematical, and healing
is an art that requires creativity and vision as well as clinical skill.
A special symposium at Wright State University on June 1 will explore
the meeting of these seemingly separate worlds through a series of interesting
talks and inspiring musical performances by faculty scientists, physicians
and musicians, as well as special guests.
The event, co-sponsored by the WSU Department of Music and the Boonshoft
School of Medicine, is free and open to the public, and runs from noon
until 7 p.m. With the exception of a special encore concert at 6 p.m.
in the WSU Concert Hall, all events will take place in White Hall on
the Wright State campus.
At 4:30 p.m., internationally renowned opera singers Rodrick Dixon and
Alfreda Burke will deliver the keynote presentation, "Thinking Outside
the Box: Improvisation in Music, Medicine and Life." Dixon and Burke
will also be speaking earlier in the day and will participate in the
encore concert to conclude the event
