WSU Boonshoft School of Medicine convocation marks an important
milestone for 100 future physicians
New medical students and their supporters gather for ceremony,
oath to welcome the class of 2013
DAYTON, Ohio—On Sunday, August 2, at the Schuster Performing Arts
Center in downtown Dayton, Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine welcomed
100 new students and their families during a special ceremony to formally
mark the start of students’ medical education.
At the annual Convocation and White Coat Ceremony, students take their
first oath of professional medical ethics, concluding with the words, “I
commit myself to a lifelong journey of learning how to cure, relieve,
and comfort with humility and compassion.”
During the ceremony, students received the symbol of their chosen profession — the
white coat. Carefully selected from a competitive group of almost
3,000 applicants, the class of 2013 will start orientation to medical
school on Monday and begin classes the following week.
Margaret M. Dunn, M.D., M.B.A., FACS, professor of surgery and executive
associate dean of the medical school and chief executive officer of Wright
State Physicians, the school’s faculty practice plan, was the invited
speaker for the event. Dunn joined the medical school faculty in 1982
and has held numerous leadership positions, including associate dean
for faculty and clinical affairs and associate program director of the
school’s Integrated Surgical Residency Program. Dunn earned her
M.D. degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and completed
her general surgery residency at Einstein-Montefiore Medical Center in
New York City. She is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons
(ACS) and a past president of the Association of Women Surgeons and the
Ohio Chapter ACS.
