Gold Humanism Honor Society Members

The Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine
has inducted 13 fourth-year medical students and six physicians into the
Gold Humanism Honor Society. The students, selected by a vote of their peers
and the medical school faculty, were recognized at a ceremony on October
21 at Country Club of the North for their “excellence in clinical care,
leadership, compassion and dedication to service.”

The Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine,
its medical student education and research enterprise, its faculty practice
plan (Wright State Physicians) and the resident training and research enterprise
of its affiliated hospitals contributed $850.5 million to the state’s
economy in 2007, according to a recent study commissioned by the Ohio Council
of Medical Deans. During the same period, they generated $24 million in state
government revenue and were responsible for supporting 13,334 jobs.

coach to address grandparents, other relatives raising children

When Wright State University Women's Basketball Coach,
Bridgett Williams, was growing up, being raised by her grandmother made her
family structure fairly unusual. Today, more than 85,000 grandparents across
Ohio are raising their grandchildren, and Williams will share her own experiences
with some of them at a special event this weekend. On Saturday, Sept. 20,
at 10 a.m., Williams will address the Trotwood Grandparent and Other Relatives
Support Group at the Dayton Metro Library Trotwood Branch.

When Harvey A. Siegal, Ph.D., founded the Weekend Intervention Program
(WIP) in 1978, he had no idea that the groundbreaking program would eventually
help more than 55,000 participants and inspire imitators throughout North
America. To support WIP and honor the memory of Siegal, the Boonshoft
School of Medicine is hosting the first annual Harvey A. Siegal Memorial
Golf Scramble on September 8 at the NCR Country Club in Kettering.

Paula Termuhlen, M.D., associate professor of surgery, has
been selected as a fellow of the 2008-2009 Hedwig van Ameringen Executive
Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women. ELAM is a yearlong
program designed to prepare senior women faculty for positions of leadership
at academic health centers. Termuhlen is chief of the medical school’s
division of surgical oncology and is program director of the general surgery
residency program.

For much of the year, Roger Pacholka, a 1987 graduate of
the Wright State University School of Medicine, practices the art of
medicine in the emergency room at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton’s
busiest ER. The rest of the year he, along with his family, live and
practice medicine on the other side of the globe in rural Swaziland or
Mozambique on the continent of Africa.

Kavita (Kavi) Kuchipudi is the recipient of the Dean’s
award, presented annually to one member of the graduating class of Wright

personal integrity and professionalism, and has earned the respect and

Dr. Jewell was presented with the Arnold P. Gold Foundation’s
Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award for a graduating medical student
during the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine’s
graduation ceremony for the Class of 2008. He was nominated by his fellow
students and faculty members and was given the award for his “consistency
in demonstrating compassion and empathy in the delivery of health care
to patients and their families.”

Richard T. Laughlin, M.D., appointed
chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery

Laughlin has been a faculty member since 1994. He serves as associate professor
and residency program director of orthopaedic surgery. He is certified by the
American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and is a fellow of the American College
of Surgeons. He is an active member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, American
Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, the American College of Surgeons, and Wright
State Physicians.

appointed chair of the new Department of Dermatology

Michael P. Heffernan, M.D., has been appointed chair of the new Department
of Dermatology at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine.
Under his leadership, the Division of Dermatology became the Department
of Dermatology in February of this year and was awarded continued accreditation

Match Day: A rite of passage for graduating
