Michael Heffernan, M.D., appointed chair of the
Michael P. Heffernan, M.D.
DAYTON, OHIO-Michael P. Heffernan, M.D., has been appointed chair of the new Department of Dermatology at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. Under his leadership, the Division of Dermatology became the Department of Dermatology in February of this year and was awarded continued accreditation by the Dermatology Residency Review Committee.
An associate professor at Wright State, Heffernan rejoined the faculty in 2005. He received a B.S. from the University of Notre Dame, and holds an M.D. from the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor. He completed an internship year in the internal medicine residency at the University of Michigan Medical Center and completed a dermatology residency and served as chief resident in the Department of Dermatology at Stanford University Medical Center in Stanford, California.
Heffernan is a board certified dermatologist by the American Board of Dermatology and the Ohio State Medical Board. He is the recipient of numerous honors and awards including the Scholar's Circle from the Dermatology Foundation, Dermatology Teacher of the Year from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, and as an American Medical Association/Glaxo Smith Kline Emerging Leader program. An Eagle Scout, he is a member of the Ohio Dermatological Association, Montgomery County Medical Society, International Society of Dermatology, Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Epsilon Delta.
As a frequently invited national presenter, Heffernan has given more than 105 lectures and presentations. He is a prolific writer, having authored 52 articles and chapters. He has been the principal investigator for 83 research studies on disorders of the skin. His efforts have also led him to serve on editorial boards and as a reviewer for journals such as Journal of Drugs in Dermatology and Archives of Dermatology.
Research, an emphasis on scholarly efforts in dermatology, and the education of resident physicians, medical students, and the general public are just some of Heffernan's goals for the new department.
