Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine welcomes
the class of 2012
100 students and their supporters gather for formal ceremony,
oath to mark the start of their medical education
DAYTON, Ohio—On Sunday, August 3, at the Schuster Performing Arts
Center, Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine welcomed
100 new students and their families during the students’ first “Rite
of Passage” — Convocation.
At the annual Convocation and White Coat Ceremony, students take their
first oath of professional medical ethics, concluding with the words, “I
commit myself to a lifelong journey of learning how to cure, relieve,
and comfort with humility and compassion.”
“Convocation truly is the first step of students’ journey
into the medical profession,” said Gary L. LeRoy, M.D., associate
dean of Student Affairs and Admissions. “This year’s ceremony
also marked the start of a new tradition. The class of 2012 will be the
first to take part in total utilization of the new Medical Education
Center at White Hall.”
“We have a very diverse class this year,” LeRoy added, “with
students from all walks of life and different undergraduate backgrounds.
This makes for a very inclusive group of students who have the potential
to become excellent, caring, patient-centered physicians of the future.”
During the ceremony, students received the symbol of their chosen profession — the
white coat. Carefully selected from a competitive group of more than
3,097 applicants, the class of 2012 will start orientation to medical
school August 4 and begin classes the following week.
Virginia C. Wood, M.D., FACP, FCCM, program director of the Internal
Medicine Residency program and associate professor of medicine, was the
invited speaker for the event. She holds an M.D. from Jefferson Medical
College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, completed an
internal medicine residency at Miami Valley Hospital, and completed fellowship
training in critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. As
residency program director, Dr. Wood oversees 100 internal medicine and
medicine/pediatric residents training at four Dayton-area hospitals.
