Chief of Neurology Appointed at Boonshoft School of Medicine

DAYTON, OHIO—Bradley S. Jacobs, M.D., M.S., has been appointed chief of the Division of Neurology and associate professor of internal medicine at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine, and director of the Comprehensive Stroke Program at Good Samaritan Hospital, effective immediately.

Jacobs’s stroke-related research, supported by a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was just published in Neurology, the scientific journal of the American Academy of Neurology. The article identifies quality of care issues and racial disparities in stroke care in a study involving more than 1,800 people admitted to hospitals with transient ischemic attack or stroke.

“Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability in the U.S., and African Americans have a higher rate of stroke and a higher rate of death from stroke than whites,” said Jacobs. “These racial disparities are important, but we should not lose sight of the fact that this data shows that there are suboptimal care in several areas for both African American and white stroke patients.”

Jacobs comes to Dayton from Wayne State University in Detroit, where he was also an attending physician in the Detroit Medical Center Hospitals system. He received his undergraduate degree in cellular and molecular biology from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He holds an M.D. from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and an M.S. in epidemiology from Columbia University School of Public Health in New York. He completed a residency in Neurology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and he served as a postdoctoral clinical fellow in stroke and neuroepidemiology at the Neurological Institute at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Stroke Association and the American Heart Association, and is board certified in Neurology and Vascular Neurology.
