Annual WSU Varandani Memorial Lecture to be
Presented by Nobel Laureate, Sir John Walker

DAYTON, OHIO - Sir John Walker, D. Phil., will present the annual Partab T. Varandani Memorial Lecture on Monday, October 8, 2001. The lecture will be held at 4:00 p.m. in room 116 Health Sciences Building on the Wright State University Campus.

The topic of Walker's talk will be, "The Rotary Mechanism of ATP Synthase." An eminent structural biologist, Walker is the director of the Dunn Human Nutrition Unit of the Medical Research Council, based in Cambridge, United Kingdom. He received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1997, along with his UCLA colleague Dr. Paul Poyer, for their work resulting in a three-dimensional structure of the F1ATPase at atomic resolution, which suggested that the mechanism of ATP synthesis is by rotary catalysis.

The talk is free and open to the public. For more information contact Wright State's Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at (937) 775-3041.

The memorial lecture honors the late Partab T. Varandani, Ph.D., who was professor and chief of the endocrinology section in Wright State's Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology until his death in 1987. The Varandani family resides in Yellow Springs.
