Free Health Screenings and Soul Food Lunch
During West Dayton Diabetes Day
DAYTON, OHIO -- Learning how to live a healthier life with diabetes
is the focus of the ninth annual West Dayton Diabetes Day on Wednesday,
November 7. The event runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Dr. Charles
R. Drew Health Center, 1323 West Third Street, Dayton.
Honorary co-chairs for this year's West Dayton Diabetes Day are Marsha
Bonhart of WDTN TV 2 News and Dayton City Commissioner, Idotha Bootsie
Neil.
West Dayton Diabetes Day offers free health screenings for blood sugar,
cholesterol, and blood pressure. People who think they may be at risk
for diabetes are urged to get a free health screening. Other activities
include: a foot care clinic, diabetic education, and information sessions
about healthy lifestyles and stress management. Diabetes Day participants
who complete four of the scheduled activities will receive free groceries,
while supplies last.
An ever-popular feature is the Healthy Soul Food Lunch, a free luncheon
from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. This year’s menu features Chicken
and Dumplings, Stewed Tomatoes and Okra, Pumpkin Cookie and a diet drink.
The meal is prepared and served in portions that meet the dietary needs
of people with diabetes.
Diabetes Day also honors the legacy of Dr. Charles R. Drew (1904–1950),
the African-American surgeon who pioneered development of the nation’s
blood banks. “We are proud of the life and achievements of Dr.
Charles R. Drew. He can be an inspiration for us all as we strive to
live healthier lives,” says Gina McFarlane-El, director of urban
health services at Good Samaritan Hospital. “To honor Dr. Drew’s
legacy, the scope of this year’s West Dayton Diabetes Day has expanded
to include the full range of services offered at the health center named
in Dr. Drew’s honor.”
Current services offered at the Dr. Charles R. Drew Health Center include
cancer education, dental services, health promotion, HIV testing, immunizations,
lupus awareness, medical services, nutrition education, podiatry (foot
care), prenatal services, rape counseling, violence prevention, and WIC.
West Dayton Diabetes Day is sponsored by Good Samaritan Hospital, the
Center for Healthy Communities, Wright State University School of Medicine
and the College of Nursing and Health, Sinclair Community College, Prevent
Blindness, the Combined Health District, the Ohio Academy of Holistic
Health, Dayton Area Diabetes Association, Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceuticals,
