Computer Requirements
The Boonshoft School of Medicine uses state-of-the-art technology in
the teaching process and, therefore, all medical students are required
to own a personal computer with the capacity for using computer-based
instructional materials. All of the instruction materials will run under
either Macintosh or Windows platform.
The school’s Interdisciplinary Teaching
Labs and Office of Student
Affairs use the Macintosh platform, and we provide full support to our
students using that platform.
General support to Windows users is provided by CaTS, but it does not
support specialized medical school applications. The decision whether
to purchase a Macintosh or Windows-based computer must be made by each
student.
Minimum Technology Requirements for Each Platform:
- G4 or later processor recommended
- Mac OS 10.3 or later
- Minimum 512 MB RAM, 1 GB recommended
- Minimum 1024x768 monitor
Windows Platforms
- Recent model Intel or AMD processor (ex Intel Pentium 4 @ 2.0 GHz)
- Min WindowsXP Home, Pref WindowsXP Professional or Media Edition*
- Min 512MB RAM, 1GB preferred
- DVD-ROM/CD-RW
- Broadband internet access
- Monitor capable of 1024x768 or higher
Most students now also choose to have computers with wireless technology
capabilities. Wright State’s campus has many entire buildings with
wireless coverage and some with areas of partial wireless coverage. For
more information about the “Wireless Zone” on campus, visit
the Computing and Telecommunications Services (CaTS) wireless site at:
http://www.wright.edu/cats/wireless/
If you do not already have a computer that you believe meets these requirements
and would like to purchase a new computer, your financial aid budget
will be increased by up to $2,000 on a one-time-only basis to pay for
it. This may be done at any time during your four years at the Boonshoft
School of Medicine. Contact the Office of Student Affairs, Financial
Aid for more information.
The university has made arrangements with Apple Computer to provide
special packages of recommended equipment at favorable pricing to our
students. You may review and/or purchase packages from Apple at its custom
on-line web store for Wright State students, staff and faculty at the Boonshoft School of Medicine Apple Store.
Students who wish to purchase Windows-based computers that comply with
the above guidelines may also do so from any vendor but some discounts
are also offered for students at: http://www.wright.edu/cats/purchase/discounts.html
