Seed Grant Program
The Boonshoft School of Medicine awards seed grants to fully-affiliated
faculty who are directly employed by Wright State University for promising
new projects in basic biomedical, clinical, and medical education research.
Funding selection will be made by March 31, 2005. Follow this link for information
about program guidelines. Application deadline: Monday, December 12,
2005. Submit 12 copies of the complete application package (including
application cover page and all required sections of the proposal).
Ohio
Physiological Society Annual Meeting
Wright State will host the 20th annual meeting of the Ohio Physiological
Society on Thursday and Friday, October 27-28, in the WSU Student Union.
The meeting begins with a reception at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. It concludes
Friday with poster presentations from 2:00-5:00 p.m. in the Multipurpose
Room. Dan R. Halm, Ph.D. (Department of Neuroscience,
Cell Biology & Physiology) is the 2005 president of the OPS.
Annual
Schizophrenia Symposium - Oct. 18
There is still time to register for the Annual Schizophrenia Symposium
sponsored by the WSU Department of Psychiatry and the Wallace-Kettering
Neuroscience Institute. The symposium will be held Tuesday, Oct. 18, from
8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., at the David H. Ponitz Center at Sinclair Community
College in Dayton. The symposium is free of charge, including lunch. The
program is certified for 6 hours of Category 1 C.M.E. credit. Registration
deadline is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14. Follow this link to see an MS

H. Morris Endowed Lecture - June 22
Salvador
Moncada, M.D., Ph.D., will present the 2005 Earl H. Morris Endowed
Lecture at Wright State University School of Medicine on Wednesday, June
22, June 22, at 3:00 p.m. in room 171 Frederick White Health Center. Dr.
Moncada is director of the Wolfson Institute for Biomedical Research at
the University College of London. The title of his lecture is "Nitric
Oxide, Mitochondria and Cell Signalling." For more information, contact

2005
Genomics Seed Grants
The Center for Genomics Research (CGR)
requests applications for the 2005 Genomics Seed Grant Program. This internal
grant program can assist faculty who want to incorporate gene expression
profiling or human genotyping in new and ongoing research projects. Selected
projects will receive materials (e.g. GeneChips or TaqMan probes) and
technical assistance from CGR. The deadline for applications is 5 p.m.
on Thursday, May 5, 2005. Yu must submit 5 copies of your

Nobel
Laureate Presents Varandani Lecture - April 7
Paul C. Lauterbur, Ph.D., will present this year's Varandani Memorial
Lecture on Thursday, April 7, at 3:15 p.m. in Room 171 Frederick White
Health Center. Dr. Lauterbur shared the 2003
Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Sir Peter Manfield,
Ph.D., for their pioneering discoveries concerning magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI). The title of Dr. Lauterbur's lecture is "Mindsets
-- Why MRI Was Delayed So Long." For more information about the Varandani

Neuroscience Day - May 10
Wright State University will host this year's Ohio-Miami Valley Neuroscience
Day on Tuesday, May 10. Neuroscience Day, the annual scientific meeting
of the Ohio Miami Valley Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience (OMV-SfN),
will feature Grass Lecturer Pat
R. Levitt, Ph.D. He is professor and director of the Kennedy Center
for Research on Human Development at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.
The topic of his lecture is "Cortical Interneurons and Neurodevelopmental
Disorders." Neuroscience
Day is free to OMV-SfN members.
Research
Challenge Collaborative Grants
Research and Sponsored Programs (RSP) requests proposals for the next
competition in the Research Challenge program funded by the Ohio Board
of Regents. The Major Collaboration and Infrastructure Grant Program is
intended to provide funding to encourage the formation of collaborative
research teams and the development of proposals for major external grants
and contracts. Only collaborative partnerships of three or more fully
affiliated faculty (preferably from two or more departments or units)
will be eligible to apply for this competition. Applications are due
in the RSP Office by April 5, 2005.

journal articles from OhioLINK, or request interlibrary loans from OhioLINK's
85 member libraries? Due to projected state budget cuts, some OhioLINK
resources that support your research are being eliminated. Other resources
may be cut in the future. In addition, there will be no new funds to purchase
new content. OhioLINK has organized a statewide information campaign to

In
Memoriam: Harvey Siegal
Harvey A. Siegal, Ph.D., died Wednesday, December 22, 2004, after a long
battle with cancer. A national leader in the field of substance abuse
research, Dr. Siegal was a professor in the Department of Community Health
and director of the Center for Interventions, Treatment and Addictions
Research (CITAR)
at Wright State. His 30-year research career included pioneering investigations
on the effectiveness of early intervention and education on substance
abuse as well as HIV prevention and risk reduction, crack cocaine and
health-services use, and strengths-based case management to improve treatment.
Dayton
Hosts 2005 OVALS Conference
The Ohio Valley Affiliates for Life Sciences (OVALS) will hold its 2005
annual conference at the Dayton Marriott Hotel on March 7-8. The conference
title is "The Promise of Innovation: OVALS Making It Happen."
Featured topics include: policy to financing--emerging trends in life
sciences; creating building blocks for university/industry agreements;
moving from lab to market--what industry wants; the regional profile--OVALS
