Internal Grant Opportunities

Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine provides internal funding programs to support faculty research and professional development. Preliminary data generated through internally funded, peer-reviewed research can increase a researcher's ability to obtain external funding.

BSOM Internal Research Grants

The Office of Research Affairs offers four internal seed grant programs for faculty investigators at the Boonshoft School of Medicine. The next application deadline for all grant programs is February 1, 2013, for project funding periods beginning July 1, 2013.

Emerging Science Seed Grants fund new research projects with a strong potential for extramural support. Submission of an external grant proposal is a required outcome. Funding: up to $15,000. See program guidelines; download the application form (MS Word).

Genomics Seed Grants support new research projects that utilize core facilities at WSU's Center for Genomics Research (CGR). Submission of an external grant proposal is a required outcome. Funding: support for a maximum of 30 gene array samples. (Funding reimburses CGR for materials and services and is NOT awarded directly to the principal investigator.) The principal investigator must have adequate funding to support all other components of the research project. PI's may also apply for an Emerging Science Seed Grant to support a study's non-genomic research components. See program guidelines; download the application form (MS Word).

Proteomics Seed Grants support new research projects that utilize core facilities at WSU's Proteome Analysis Laboratory (PAL). Submission of an external grant proposal is a required outcome. Funding: support for a maximum of 38 proteome samples. (Funding reimburses PAL for materials and services and is NOT awarded directly to the principal investigator.) The principal investigator must have adequate funding to support all other components of the research project. PI's may also apply for an Emerging Science Seed Grant to support a study's non-proteomic research components. See program guidelines; download the application form (MS Word).

Medical Education Research Grants support rigorous scientific research in medical education that may not necessarily lead to future extramural support. Engaging the educational research community is a required outcome. Funding: up to $5,000, departmental matching support expected. See program guidelines; download the application form (MS Word).

Seed grant proposals will be evaluated using criteria based on the NIH Enhanced Review Criteria implemented in 2009. Modifications have been made to fit the scale of the BSOM's internal seed grant programs. Reviewers will evaluate proposals using a 9-point scoring system similar to that used by NIH.

The BSOM Research Committee will review and score the proposals. Recommendations will be made for the top ranked proposals and submitted to the BSOM Associate Dean for Research Affairs for final decision.

If you have questions about the seed grant programs, contact Virginia Byrd, administrative assistant (virginia.byrd@wright.edu; 775-3018).

Bridge Grants

From time to time there may be a limited amount of funds available to provide Bridge Grants to highly productive investigators, with a strong track record of external grant funding, who find themselves in between grants. The purpose of these Bridge Grants is to provide the investigator with sufficient funds to allow work to continue in their laboratory in order to secure the next round of external grant funding. Specific application process and terms apply. Please contact the Office of Research Affairs (927-775-3018) to schedule a meeting with the Interim Associate Dean to discuss the application process.

Matching Funds for Equipment

The Action Fund, a program of the Ohio Board of Regents, offers matching funds for equipment costing at least $250,000.
