Scholarly Activities
Research Program
Research is required of each resident. Before completing
the program, each resident is required to bring at least one research
project to completion and to prepare a paper which is judged to be worthy
of publication. As can be seen from the list of resident presentations
and publications, many of these projects are brought to publication,
but many more do not lead to publication but do contribute to the resident
understanding of and appreciation for the research method. There is a
specific research/rehab rotation during the 2nd year.

Clinical Studies
Clinical studies form an active part of the research endeavors at Wright
State University Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, and include several
industry funded projects as well as unfunded clinical studies performed
at Miami Valley Hospital. Presently IRB approved studies in progress
include:
a. Norian SDS, as a skeletal replacement system for wrist fracture stabilization.
This is an FDA approved investigational device exemption (IDE) implantable
material used as an adjuctant in wrist fracture treatment. This is a
multi-center randomized prospective study in conjunction with 12 other
research centers across the country and is funded by Norian Corporation
of Cupertino, CA. This project involves utilizing Hospital services,
hand therapy in the occupational therapy division, Clinical Research
Division of Miami Valley Hospital, and the Department of Biomedical Imaging
under Wright State University.
Finally, numerous articles, projects and case reports continue to progress,
including an article accepted for publication in the Journal of Orthopaedic
Trauma. Reference: Wright, D.G., Taitsman, L., and Laughlin, R.T.: Pelvic
and Bladder Trauma: Also, a case study has been submitted to the Journal
of Trauma. Also a Pelvic Fractures with Vascular Injuries: Indications
