Test Bed at Calamityville

Civilian and military first providers, responding to both natural and man-made disasters, merit access to the right equipment and technology to support their efforts as they serve our nation and each of our local communities. While traditional iterative laboratory testing may confirm that a first provider intended product meets a particular technical specification, only workplace or field testing allows a product to be rapidly yet thoroughly vetted and proven ready for use.

Unique Aspects of Calamityville, the NCMR Tactical Laboratory, as a Product Testing Facility

Calamityville is uniquely positioned in mission, geographic location, climate and support infrastructure to meet this growing need for first provider product evaluation and testing. As a commercialization test bed, Calamityville’s 55 acres of open field, urban/industrial buildings, classrooms, and reconfigurable Joint Command Operations and Research Environment (J-CORE) provide an ideal location for exposing products to rigorous hands-on testing. The area’s temperate climate allows for evaluation of products in the extremes of all four seasons, while being easily accessible via the I-70/I-75 corridors and Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus international airports. In immediate proximity to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Calamityville is situated for easy air and ground access by military personnel, as well as the services and props available through the base.

Fully integrated with Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine, and supported by the faculty of Wright State University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science and Raj Soin College of Business, the Test Bed at Calamityville provides a distinctive confluence of disciplines needed to manage the evaluation of the unique products required by our first providers. Rigorous test/experimental protocol design, statistical analysis and reporting ensure significance of findings. Focus on customer expectations throughout the process drives success for all involved.

The flow of first providers and supply chain decision makers through Calamityville’s continuing education and accredited undergraduate/graduate training courses is positioned to provide important two-way exposure for new disaster response products and solutions. Product developers and manufacturers are positioned to gain important insight into the emerging needs of first providers and the results of their critical evaluation, while actual first responders and supply chain decision makers gain valuable exposure to both emerging and market ready products that can make a positive difference in disaster outcomes.

In short, the Test Bed at Calamityville offers an effective product evaluation solution for businesses focused on developing and manufacturing products and technological solutions for disaster first providers and can serve as an important partner in getting the right solution into the right hand to make a life and death difference.
