Research Travel Student Scholarship
The Global Health Systems Research Travel Scholarship
is provided by the Global Health Systems Program and is designed for
health systems research of primarily developed countries. Every year,
up to four scholarships, not to exceed $1,250 each, may be awarded based
on available funds. These scholarships will be available exclusively
to Wright State University medical students. The scholarship will provide
funds for travel, i.e. transportation, lodging, food, and other travel
related expenses. Awardees will be selected on a competitive basis.
Requirements
- Travel scholarships will be ONLY for health systems research (not
for general international medical travel).
- Applicants will submit: (a) a detailed proposal describing the desired
activity, location, applied research proposal and budget, (b) proposed
contact, (c) a letter of support from an Academic Advisor at Boonshoft
School of Medicine, and (d) a letter of support from a Research Supervisor in the host
institution abroad. (See below for the description of Research Supervisors.)
- Research supervisors are responsible for supervising the design,
execution and interpretation of the research project. The supervisor
can be in the United States or another country. Students may have more than
one research supervisor. Research supervisors are not required to have
doctoral degrees, but they are required to have faculty appointments
at their university/institution.
- Applicants must be medical students at Wright State University
Boonshoft School of Medicine.
- Students in the M.D./M.P.H. Program could use the preliminary trip as
a potential practice placement and the research trip to conduct their
culminating experience.
- Students in the M.D./M.B.A. Program should consider using the research trip for
the M.B.A. capstone.
- Applicants must have earned at least and maintained a 76 percent academic average
as medical students.
- Upon return, awardees will be required to provide oral and written
presentations of their work (of minimum national poster quality). Applicants
must possess a valid passport at least three months before departure.
Application Timeline
- Applications must be received by November 30 or May 31.
- Applicants should file their applications at least six months prior to the intended
time of research.
- A pre-selected faculty review committee will be responsible for reviewing
all proposals submitted and determining the allocation of available funds.
- Award(s) will be announced in the month following the application deadline.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I have to speak the language of the country I
want to go to?
A: Fluency in the language spoken in the host country
may be required for certain research.
Q: Can I get medical or graduate school credit for
my research?
A: Yes. Independent Study (CMH 791) graduate credit
is available. For medical school credit, students may apply for the B1 International
Elective or the Year 4 (B2) Extramural International Elective. M.D./M.P.H. students
may seek Practice Placement (CMH 810) and Culminating Experience (CMH
820, 821) credits. M.D./M.B.A. students may seek (Capstone M.B.A. 755) credits.
Credits will be awarded based on standard university practices and
policies.
Q: If my application is not selected, can I reapply?
A: Yes. Students are encouraged to rewrite their proposals
and reapply.
Q: How long do I have to finish the research?
A: Awardees must complete their research within 18
months from the date of the initial award.
