Continuing Medical Education

To enhance health care delivery, Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine supports the development of continuing medical education (CME) programming for physicians. CME consists of educational activities which serve to maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge, skills, and professional performance and relationships that a physician uses to provide services for patients, the public or the profession.  Physicians need to participate in both category I and category II educational activities for a balanced personal educational program.

CME activities must not promote recommendations, treatment or manners of practicing medicine that are known to have risks or dangers that outweigh the benefits, or are known to be ineffective in the treatment of patients. Note that an organization whose program of CME is devoted to advocacy of unscientific modalities of diagnosis or therapy is not eligible to apply for ACCME accreditation. As of August 1, 2009, the Wright State University CME program will not be accepting joint sponsored activity applications.

Category I — Category I activities serve to maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge, skills, professional performance and relationships a physician uses to provide services for patients, the public or the profession. They are formally organized and planned educational meetings that cover specific subject areas that are scientifically valid and appropriate in depth and scope for the intended physician audience (e.g., conferences, grand rounds, symposia, seminars, departmental scientific meetings). See the Activity Calendar for a list of upcoming CME offerings.

Category II — Activities not designated Category I (e.g., reading authoritative medical literature, consultation with peers and medical experts, developing and reviewing quality assessment data, use of electronic data bases in patient care, small-group discussions, self-assessment activities, teaching health professionals medical writing teleconferences) are designated as Category II.
