Submitted Publishable Paper/Project
It is the unanimous opinion of the WSU/EM faculty and the RRC-EM that
a paper of publishable quality be part of the requirement for graduation
from the Emergency Medicine Residency Program. The skills developed
by use of library services, literature review, paper organization and
outline, writing and revising, and going through the process of submission
and editorial review, are all considered an important part of resident
experience. Examples of acceptable papers are:
- Primary research paper, either basic or clinical. This can be
retrospective or prospective.
- Review paper. This paper should be an extensively researched
and thorough coverage of a topic pertinent to emergency medicine.
- Case report. This can be a single report or a series, but must
include a well researched discussion. Being the primary author on
one of the case conferences seen in the Emergency Medicine literature
will also satisfy this requirement.
- Other. At the discretion of the Program Director.
Editorials, book reviews, and letters to the editor are all useful
and important forms of written expression, but will not fulfill the
above requirement.
It is recommended that the type of paper and subject be selected near
the end of the R-I or beginning of the R-II year. The faculty serving
as Research Coordinator will be the first contact for all ideas. Assignments
to other faculty will be made through the Research Coordinator. This
faculty also does a biannual review (summer, winter) of the topics
being considered by residents, and their status. Once assigned, all
faculty should be willing to assist in topic definition, project development,
and paper writing advice. Frequently, this would allow the faculty
to be a co-author on the paper. Authorship is best worked out early
in the process of defining the project.
A paper need not be published for credit to be given, but it must
be approved by the faculty and submitted to one of the acceptable journals
pertinent to emergency medicine. Advice on journal submission is available
from any of the faculty.
