Conference Attendance
Attendance at the didactic series presented by this department is
an essential part of the training program. The nature of the program
should allow, in most circumstances, full attendance. A combination
of incentives and disincentives exist to assist compliance with this
policy.
Policy:
A cumulative attendance of 70% or greater is required to allow the
resident to engage in a selective in the R-III year. Deviation from
this minimum standard may result in disciplinary actions or reduction
in educational freedoms (such as moonlighting, selective choice, etc.).
Conference attendance includes Emergency Medicine Conference on Friday
afternoon, the Year Directed series on Tuesday afternoon, Journal Club,
and specially arranged lectures. Should you be unable to attend any
conferences you should call the office or talk to preceptor prior to
your absence.
Methodology:
At each conference, a tally sheet for the residents' signature or
initials will be made available. This tally sheet will be retrieved
at the end of the lecture and used to maintain a year-long tally of
lecture attendance. It is expected that once signed in, the resident
will not leave the conference until it is over, unless necessitated
by clinical duties.
Updating:
The biannual RRC letter issued in November/December and June/July
will include a percentage tally of conference attendance, with appropriate
commentary. This will enable the resident to be kept abreast of attendance
status and stress the importance of participation in this training
program.
Incentive:
As an incentive to enlist an interest in conference attendance, the
top attenders will receive appropriate recognition-Best attendance
per class and R-III best attendance for program. The announcements
will be made at the residency graduation.
