Academic Interests

Dr. Gebhart has been involved in emergency care and education dating back to 1985. In his early career as a certified paramedic, he introduced numerous advances in pre-hospital care including promoting early cardiac care. In 2005, he co-founded the Homeland Emergency Learning and Preparedness (HELP) Center™ with department chair Dr. Glenn Hamilton out of a desire to define civil medical readiness, to apply best practices to a resilient community model and to apply sound scientific principles to an entirely anecdote-based and non-scientific system of emergency and disaster preparedness. That same year, he founded the emergency preparedness concentration track in the Master of Public Health program, which enrolls civilian and military public health professionals and health care leaders from across Ohio and the nation. Dr. Gebhart is one of only two physicians holding the rank of task force leader in the U.S. Urban Search and Rescue Response System, a component of the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
