Thank you to all who attended! The 20th Annual
Midwest Regional SAEM Meeting was a great success. Attendance was over 70,
and we had 46 posters on display with topics ranging from cell biology, to
disaster and trauma, to airway control, and including one on finger length
ration as a predictor of career choice!
Several of you joined us on the night of the 7th for a reception at the EM
offices. The Center for Immersive
Medical Education and Research (CIMER) made
for an excellent backdrop to the evening, and received multiple compliments
from those present.
The morning of the 8th proceeded smoothly, with pre-registrants and new registrants
filing in for the morning keynote, which began at 9 a.m. Dr.
Linda Druelinger and her panel (Drs. John Younger, Mary Jo Wagner, and Glenn Hamilton) spoke
about Advancing the Academic Career, and served as wonderful resources for
those wishing to set off on, or to continue an academic path. Following this,
we broke off into the two oral presentation groups, Education and Clinical
Research. Twelve presenters, a mixed group of medical students, residents,
and faculty, made the presentations interesting and educational. You can see

After lunch, Brigadier
General Hersack presented a thorough, highly insightful
look into the collaboration between civilian and military medicine, providing
numerous examples of the ways in which concepts learned and tested on the battlefield
have made their way into medicine on the homefront, and how technology has
allowed leaps to be made in initial care, transport, and definitive care of
injured soldiers and civilians.
Attendees then broke into groups for discussions about Disaster and Tactical
Medicine, Simulation, and a Q/A with Program and Clerkship Directors. Everyone
came away with great ideas which they may be able to use back home and in their
future careers!
We hope that all in attendance found the meeting fun and worthwhile, and will
continue the tradition. The regional meetings serve as an excellent venue for
the young physician interested in academics to see what it's all about, for
important research to be presented, and as a place where access is granted
to those influential figures in EM who are often unable to be tracked down
at the larger national meetings.
We are all looking forward to the Midwest
Regional in 2011, to be held at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, in Toledo,
Ohio! |
