Reach Out of Montgomery County is a 501-c(3) healthcare organization, founded in 1994 by leading medical institutions in the Miami Valley area: Wright State University School of Medicine, the Combined Health District, and the Montgomery County Medical Society.

In Montgomery County, about 27 percent of the population is considered part of the “working poor,” citizens who work in jobs that do not provide health insurance. Uninsured individuals are more likely to die prematurely and two times more likely to go without medication. Using the assistance of volunteer physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, Reach Out provides free healthcare to the underserved and uninsured. A large number of Wright State’s medical students volunteer their time at Reach Out clinics, which are established throughout the Dayton community. The clinics provide health care evenings and Saturdays to accommodate patient work schedules.

The Class of 2000 has established the Jacob P. Deerhake Memorial Scholarship in memory of their classmate, who received numerous awards as a medical student and as an internal medicine resident and chief resident at the University of Michigan. Dr. Deerhake died at the age of 30 from a rare form of brain cancer.
