Course Description:

Starting with the physiologic principles of both the male and female reproductive systems, this course proceeds with the acute and chronic diseases of the reproductive organs and introduces the important aspects of perinatal medicine.

By the conclusion of this course, the student will demonstrate the ability to:

K1 Describe the fertilization process and hormonal control of ovulation

K2 Discuss hormonal control of reproduction.

K3 Describe normal and abnormal genital development

  • Diagnose and develop a treatment plan for patients with ambiguous genitalia

K4Describe both normal and abnormal pubertal development

  • Diagnose and suggest treatment options for both precocious and delayed puberty

K5 Describe disorders of androgen excess

  • Diagnose PCOS, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and Cushings' syndrome, and suggest a treatment plan for each

K6 Discuss Menopause and be able to recommend suitable hormonal and non-hormonal treatment options.

K7 Discuss both infertility and fertility prevention

  • Describe a standard fertility evaluation and treatment options
  • Describe both hormonal and non-hormonal contraception and when to use each

K8 Discuss benign and malignant conditions of the female genital tract and demonstrate knowledge of the pathology of the ovary, uterus, cervix, vagina, and vulva

K9 Discuss both benign and malignant conditions of the breast and demonstrate knowledge of how to diagnose and treat each condition

K10 Discuss conditions of the male genital tract and to be able to diagnose conditions of the prostate and testis

K11 Describe conditions associated with male infertility and treatment options

K12 Describe the physiologic changes of pregnancy

K13 Discuss both normal and abnormal pregnancy and demonstrate an understanding of the pathophysiology of pre-eclampsia, preterm labor, and pregnancy-associated diabetes

K14 Discuss the various teratogens and their effects on the fetus

K15 Discuss human sexuality and the pathophysiology of the human sexual response

K16 Discuss pregnancy termination and some of the legal and ethical issues involved in the procedure

C1 Work effectively in teams, through the team-based learning modules in the area of breast diseases

C3 Discuss contraception, hormonal replacement, and disorders of puberty and of genital development
