Student Organizations: Specialty Clubs

Specialty Clubs Overview

These are student-run organizations with faculty advisors and guest speakers. Each specialty club explores situations and medical problems associated with the particular specialty. The clubs meet regularly during the school year and flyers are distributed, listing time and place of the meetings. Meals are provided. Students can belong to more than one of these organizations; no commitment is necessary, only an interest in becoming more informed about a specialty.

Club Medd (Internal Medicine) Club

Internal Medicine is the medical specialty of adult primary care. With a career in internal medicine, you can be a primary care physician or a specialist. The medial specialties included in internal medicine are:

  • Allergy
  • Cardiology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Hematology
  • Immunology
  • Infectious Disease
  • Nephrology
  • Oncology
  • Pulmonology
  • Rheumatology

Club Medd meetings have been held on the Wright State campus and at Miami Valley Hospital. The meetings include presentations of current medical topics of interest with emphasis on internal medicine.

Dermatology Interest Group

The WSU Dermatology Interest Group is a club that allows medical students to learn about and become more involved in the specialty of dermatology. Skin is the largest organ in the human body. This complex system is also very vulnerable. Learning and focusing on care, treatment, research, and also helping in the area of community-awareness is our main goal. There are no club dues, and all medical students are invited to come to the meetings. The DIG faculty advisor is Dr. Julian Trevino.

Emergency Medicine Interest Group

The Emergency Medicine Interest Group EMIG allows medical students an inside look into one of the most competitive specialties in medicine. Residencies in Emergency Medicine are increasingly sought after due to its inherent patient and case variety, fast pace and excellent compatibility with both family and personal life. Meetings are held every other month and include hands-on seminars in techniques such as suturing and wound closure, casting and splinting, and airway management. Presentations are also made by noted attending physicians in Emergency Medicine, and cover important case studies and ways to improve the student's chances of earning an EM residency. EMIG students are also afforded opportunities to shadow in local Emergency Departments with current residents and attending physicians, participate in ride time with local EMS units, and even experience flight time with Miami Valley Hospital's CareFlight helicopter medical transport service. The EMIG faculty advisor is Dr. Michael Ballester.

Family Medicine Interest Group

The Family Medicine Interest Group is a club that allows students to learn about and become involved in the diverse field of family practice. The family physician is trained to provide continuous, comprehensive health maintenance and medical care to the entire family. Members are also actively involved in the Ohio and American Academies of Family Physicians as student representatives at meetings and convention. Past guest speaker topics have included new diagnostic procedures and therapies, economic issues in modern medicine and how they will affect your practice, and physician lifestyle management. Members can receive The American Family Physician, a very readable journal, free for the first year. There are no club dues, and all medical students are invited to come to the meetings. The FMIG faculty advisor is Dr. Bruce Binder.

Obstetrics and Gynecology Club

Obstetrics and Gynecology Club is a newly active organization created for those with a special interest in the reproductive health care of women. An emphasis will be placed on the health care needs of patients addressed by Ob/Gyn physicians. Topics of interest include: prenatal care, contraception, menopause, and preventative screening procedures.
