These groups reflect a wide range of student activity and advocacy for
community outreach, international service, student governance, and leisure
activities.
Community Service Outreach
Community Service Outreach has organized a series of local projects to
help the less fortunate. Volunteers are asked to participate throughout
the year in various activities such as acting as a respite for families
of mentally retarded and developmentally delayed (MR/DD) patients at Southview,
taking the patients to the Cincinnati Zoo, and assisting at a prom held
for emotionally disturbed patients. Other projects considered have included
working with the homeless and nursing home patients.
Crew Team
This is a new club intended to offer medical students and their significant
others an opportunity to enjoy the lovely waters of downtown Dayton while
they are getting a workout. There are opportunities to race or row leisurely
depending on the wants of the members.
Global Health Initiative
Global Health Initiative (GHI) was founded in 2000 by Boonshoft School
of Medicine first-year students. GHI's mission is to enhance the education
of WSU medical students by facilitating their exposure to both the medical
issues facing people in other countries and the medical issues of persons
in this country who have immigrated from other countries, and in so doing,
inspire greater compassion, social justice, and empathy within WSU’s
future physicians.
Journal Club
The Journal Club was organized to help students become familiar with current
areas of research in medicine. Brown-bag luncheon meetings are held every
week and articles from various journals are read and discussed. Photocopies
of the articles are provided for interested students.
Medical Research Club
After conducting a survey among the Wright State Medical School, it was
determined that about 30% of students were interested in medical research
at some point during their medical career.
The Wright State Medical School Research Club would allow students to: learn about
current research topics from researchers and physicians, understand and
learn research techniques, understand why research is important to the
medical career and how physicians can be part of the loop, discover research
opportunities at Wright State and around the Dayton area, and provide
students with contact information to research opportunities via meetings,
websites, physicians, labs, etc.
Medical School Student Council
The Medical School Student Council (MSSC) conducts
student affairs other than those related to academic progress; administers
guidelines for dress and conduct; serves as a forum for student discussion
of common problems and, when deemed necessary, organizes committees to
deal with student concerns; presents student recommendations to the faculty
and administration; elects student representatives to medical school committees;
makes recommendations to the dean on student appointees to the Organization
of Student Representatives of the American Association of Medical Colleges,
and a delegate and alternate delegate to AMA-MSS.
Military Medicine Club
This is a club of medical students who are interested in military medicine
rams or who are already a member of a military service organization. Meetings
will be planned on a once-per-quarter basis and will include guest speakers,
formation regarding military obligations, and one's role as a future military
physician. The fall quarter business meeting will include discussions about
a constitution and by-laws, group activities, leadership opportunities,
and general membership information. Senior officer advisors will be provided
for interested Year I members. A participation award program will also
be initiated at the fall meeting.
Spanish Club
As students and future physicians, medical students will undoubtedly encounter
a growing number of Spanish speaking patients. This new club attempts to
address this issue by learning conversational Spanish with an emphasis
on medical terminology. The classes try to encompass all levels from beginners
to advanced. Several fluent speakers head small groups at different levels.
We attempt to meet once a week during the lunch hour.
Spouses of Medical Students (SOMS)
Spouses of Medical Students (SOMS) is an organization that supports spouses
and significant others of WSU medical students, sponsored in part by the
Montgomery County Medical Society Alliance.
Student to Student (STS)
The Student to Student program enables medical students
to actually use their medical knowledge by teaching other students from
kindergarten through college. |
