Physicians for Human Rights, Wright State University Chapter

This December, Wright State medical students are partnering with campus departments, local businesses, and community members to sponsor tuition for two children at Ngando Preparatory School in Lenana, Kenya.

Boonshoft School of Medicine medical students affiliated with Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), Wright State University Chapter, are holding a holiday fundraising raffle to provide for the education of two children in Kenya. The raffle event and giveaway will be held Thursday, December 6 at noon in Room 120 of White Hall on Wright State’s Campus, 3640 Colonel Glenn Highway.

Tickets are $1/ticket or 6 for $5.

Second-year medical student, Loren Schindler-Gavaghan volunteered this past summer in a primary school teaching children in the slums of Lenana near Nairobi, Kenya. She came back to the United States with a passion to help improve access to education for the children of Kenya. Her efforts have led to PHR sponsoring two children in that country for one year of education. The children are Sharon (age 7) and Ali (age 9).

Physicians for Human Rights’ vision is to mobilize the health professions to advance the health and dignity of all people by protecting human rights. As a founding member of the International Campaign to ban landmines, PHR shared the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize. This year, one of Wright State’s PHR chapter’s primary campaigns is global education. In areas of deep poverty or historical conflict, education is seen as the key to improving health conditions. The students working with PHR believe that they can make a difference for these children in Lenana, Kenya, by providing the opportunity for Sharon and Ali to attend school in the coming year. Through this we can be a part of improving conditions for the whole community.

Sponsors for the event raffle include many Wright State University and School of Medicine Departments: Community Health, Interdisciplinary Teaching Labs, Theatre, Bookstore, and Campus Dining, as well as faculty and students involved in the Wright State Chapters of the American Medical Association, Student National Medical Association, and Global Health Initiative. Local merchants who have generously made donations to this event include: Bath and Body Works, Brio Tuscan Grille, Cheesecake Factory, Frisch’s Big Boy, Therapy Café, and Trader Joe’s.
