Residency Application Timetable

June-July

Register for the NRMP (all students must do this, even those seeking a military position; military scholarship students not successful in obtaining a military residency will participate in the NRMP for a civilian position; students seeking one of the advanced specialty [PGY-2] positions in urology, ophthalmology, neurology otolaryngology, or neurosurgery, should also register)

 

Consult the Green Book (Directory of Graduate Medical Education Programs), available in Student Affairs, departmental offices, advisor's offices, most libraries, and the Internet

 

Consult AMA’s FREIDA on the Internet at the AMA home page

 

Write to programs; request brochures; for non-ERAS programs, request applications

 

Prepare a personal narrative

 

Prepare a Curriculum Vita

 

Register for PGY-2 matches in neurological surgery, neurology, otolaryngology, urology and ophthalmology

 

July 15: begin working on MyERAS application

 

August-Sept.

September 1: Programs begin downloading applications

 

Military scholarship students participate in the military selection process

 

Review your Dean's Letter for accuracy

 

Provide list of residency program addresses for the Dean's Letter if not in ERAS

 

Request letters of recommendation; provide letter writer with CV and personal narrative; stamps and envelopes are not necessary; request a letter from the WSU department chair in your specialty(s) of interest

 

September

A few students will begin interviewing, this continues through January

 

Send thank you letters to program directors and other important interviewers

 

October

Review your Dean’s Letter

 

November 1

The Dean's Letter is sent if you have reviewed it

 

January

PGY-2 Advanced Specialty matches take place

Submit rank order list through the web, you will need a password and pin

About mid-March, unsuccessful students will "scramble" for a position on a Tuesday, two days prior the general announcement which is always on a Thursday (commonly referred to as match day; all students (whether matched or unmatched) will receive an envelope containing their “matched” residency program
