Essentials of Fourth Year Scheduling

Approved by Faculty Curriculum Committee, March 2006

The fourth year requires eight months of medical or medically related experiences including:

  1. One month Emergency Medicine
  2. One month Neurology
  3. One month J-I in any of the six core specialties*
  4. One month Surgery*
  5. Four months of electives.

*The Junior Internship in Surgery may not be counted toward BOTH these requirements.

Excluding ER and Neurology (so from the remaining 6 months), every student must fulfill the Clinical Triad – three months of clinical rotations from three different departments.

  • The triad must include one 'primary care' month, defined as any clinical rotation in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics.
  • The surgical month and the J-I can be counted as part of the required clinical triad.
Don't forget:
  • Two months (not including ER or Neuro) may be taken at an institution other than WSU and its affiliated hospitals. Special approval is needed for additional "away" months.
  • Two months of the ‘identical educational experience’ may be allowed only if completed at two different institutions.
  • Month blocks may be split into two two-week experiences. Only two split months are allowed.
  • Only three student initiated electives will be allowed.
