BMB 427: Human Biochemistry (Also listed as BMB 627)

This course is designed to introduce students to the metabolic activities underlying normal physiological states, the way they are subverted in disease processes, and the way molecular level understanding is leading to new treatments. BMB 427 is designed as a continuation of BMB 421/423. Although some review of normal metabolic processes will occur, in BMB 427 the focus is a better understanding of the consequences of abnormal metabolism. The goal is to enhance critical thinking skills for professional careers in medicine or science. Topics discussed currently are atherosclerosis, steroid hormones, prostaglandins, diabetes, visual and hearing disorders, AIDS, cancer, amino acid-related disease and acid-base imbalance.
