About Aerospace Medicine

Aerospace Medicine is the preventive medicine primary specialty that promotes the health and functional well-being of pilots, astronauts, and other flight crew members and all other persons traveling in the air or space.

The civilian Aerospace Medicine Residency Program conducted at Wright State University is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The United State Air Force also has a training program at Brooks Air Force Base, Texas. The Navy has a program in Pensacola, Florida, and a second civilian program is located at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. The Navy and Air Force programs are available only for military personnel.

Career Opportunities: Civilian physicians trained in aerospace medicine may find work in a NASA facility, the Federal Aviation Administration, an airline medical department/clinic, an aerospace manufacturer, private practice of aerospace medicine, medical research, or academia. With an increase in domestic and international passenger travel, continuing space shuttle flights, the International Space Station, and the new moon & Mars initiative, the demand for competent aerospace medicine support is expected to increase in demand.
