Getting Started
Setting Up Your New Palm Pilot
General Steps for Setting Up Your Palm OS 5 Device:
1. Your first step is to install the "Palm Desktop" program
which I would recommend grabbing from Palm's Website.
It is a few extra steps to get it from the website, but this is the
newest version. This doesn’t apply to Treo/Centro users. You'll
need to set this up through the install guide. This loads up a program
called Palm Desktop on your computer, and it knows how to talk to
your Palm Pilot when you plug it in and sync it. Launch the program
after it is done installing. Set up a user name that you want to be
on your Palm Pilot and any other steps it wants you to.
2. You might want to do a cursory sync now by plugging in your Palm
and hitting the "Hotsync" button on the home page of the
Palm unit itself. This will get your Palm ready and put your user
profile from your computer on it. Now any changes you make to dates
and addresses, and any notes you take will get synced back to your
computer and be able to be seen using the Palm Desktop program.
3. Now you can start downloading med programs and installing other
programs from the CD your Palm came with. It is good to do a sync
and set up a user name before you load on these programs because they'll
want to only work with one user profile.
4. The main med programs I mentioned in the powerpoint are going to
install extra programs on your computer that will communicate with
their own servers over the internet, and then use Palm Desktop to
sync that information to your Palm. That sounds a little bit complicated
I know, but it is probably the easiest way to explain it. The actual
installation of these programs is pretty simple, but most will require
that you make an account with their respective companies to use them.
I would recommend syncing after you load on each program. You might
find that some have different modules that you can install, like the
PDR. Just pick the ones you want and load it up. You’re limited
only by the memory in your Palm Pilot.
